🗣️Roll call! You got your shield, Sis?

We’re in the final push of Shield September, and now is the moment to step up, stand tall, and protect people and our communities.

On our journey to 4,000 new members by the end of the year, every single person who joins is another shield raised and another community protected, another voice added to our army.

This is your chance to be part of something bigger. Our strength is unstoppable when we rise together.

So, if you haven’t joined already, or if you have, please help us reach this important goal.

Our village is unstoppable when we rise together. Forward this email to your folks and tell them to join you in protecting our communities.

Your Expertise is Needed!

We’re completely revamping The Right Response Directory and need your input to ensure it meets our community’s needs.

This critical resource connects you to alternative first-response programs offering compassionate support through peer responders, clinicians, and trained EMTs for calls like welfare checks, noise complaints, traffic incidents, and mental health crises.

Your feedback is vital for us to improve. Please take a few minutes to complete our confidential survey. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

This past week has been chock full of events, connections, revelations, and moments of joy. Monday, we hosted a webinar to help women prevent burnout. Tuesday, we joined LaToya Benton, Mother of Xzavier Hill, as she filed documents with the Supreme Court to challenge qualified immunity. Wednesday through Saturday we were at the Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Legislative Conference (CBC ALC) being reminded of our strength and the power of using our unique gifts to combat oppressive systems. It was an amazingly refreshing and timely convening with some of the nation’s greatest defenders of democracy.

Above are a few photos of the week. We will share more on our social media pages. Be sure to follow and connect with us on the platform of your choice. @weare1M4

Our Founder, Tansy, shared thoughts live at the conference. Click the buttons below to listen in and engage with us there.

A Mental Health Tip For You

Need to reset? Take 5–10 minutes to do a full-body scan:

  1. Sit or lie down comfortably.

  2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

  3. Slowly bring your attention from your toes up to your head, noticing any tension, tightness, or discomfort.

  4. As you breathe, imagine releasing tension from each area of your body.

  5. Finish with three slow, grounding breaths, feeling your body fully supported.

Spread Some Blessings!

The consequences of police violence extend far beyond the loss of life. For families affected, it’s the loss of income, the sacrifice of basic necessities, and the start of a high-cost legal fight. If you have the capacity, consider donating to 1M4. Proceeds help support impacted families and sustain the work of 1M4 toward ending police violence for good.

As September comes to a close, we want to wish you a strong and peaceful end to the month. Take a moment to recognize those we’ve lost to mental health struggles—friends, family, and community members who battled silently, including those affected by suicide or attempts. Their memories remind us why this work matters so deeply.

Whether it’s donating to 1M4, joining as a member, or inviting someone to shield the village, every action helps us reach our goal of 4,000 new members by year’s end—expanding protection, resources, and care across our communities.

We’re always here for you and we’re in this work together. Take care of yourself, protect your peace, and let’s keep building the shield for everyone who needs it.
