When someone we love is in crisis, the way we respond is critical.
Mental health shouldn’t be met with handcuffs or guns.
That’s why we created The Right Response to help our communities respond with care.
Whether you’re supporting a loved one or figuring out safe alternatives to calling 911, we’re here for you.
This week’s What We’re Watching highlights a powerful example of what this can look like when a mother chooses care for her daughter and when community-based organizations make a different, more compassionate kind of response possible.
We’re not helpless. We’re building the future, one choice, one share, and one shield at a time.
“When the heart is right, the mind and body will follow.”
— Coretta Scott King
What We’re Watching
When Crystal recognized that her daughter was in a mental health crisis, she chose care over criminalization. This powerful story shows how the Right Response can change everything. In partnership with 1M4, Georgetown Law’s CICS, and Canopy Roots’ Minneapolis BCR team, this video highlights what community-led crisis response can and should look like.
We’ll be sharing more stories like this soon! 🌿 Learn more about Canopy Roots

A Mental Health Tip For You
After nearly 5 years of advocacy by 1M4, Terence & Ferrone are finally home with their families. Free after 25 years of wrongful incarceration and yesterday our Founder, Tansy, got to meet them in person.
The freedom celebration brunch with their mothers, supporters, and legal team was an amazingly joyful experience!
We cannot thank you all, our community of supporters & subscribers, enough for helping us with this massive endeavor.
They are home and have launched a clothing line with the release of their book coming soon!

A Mental Health Tip For You
Sistas, we’ve gotta start checking in with each other more often.
Try this: Make a 3-person check-in circle.
Choose 2–3 trusted people: friends, cousins, elders, and create a group text or call schedule just to check in on each other weekly.
No pressure, no fixing. Just a “How’s your mind?” or “What do you need today?” This simple cadence of connection helps interrupt isolation and reminds us: we’re not meant to carry it all alone.
In 1M4, we check in with each other weekly. Want to be included in our checkins? Join us HERE
Spread Some Blessings!
The consequences of police violence extend far beyond the loss of life. For families affected, it’s the loss of income, the sacrifice of basic necessities, and the start of a high-cost legal fight. If you have the capacity, consider donating to 1M4. Proceeds help support impacted families and sustain the work of 1M4 toward ending police violence for good.
