Juneteenth was just days ago, but the struggle it represents is ongoing.

Over a century later, we’re still fighting to be fully seen. Still navigating institutions that harm more than help.

From mental health to housing, education to emergency response, the systems built around us often fail to work for us.

And not to mention decisions being made at the top that impact us all *clears throat and deep ancestral sigh*

Juneteenth reminds us how far we’ve come…and how much farther we have to go.

As we look ahead, we’re honoring ourselves and our ancestors by:

  • Prioritizing non-police crisis response, so no one fears asking for help

  • Investing in real resources, not just performative promises

  • Protecting our civil rights, including the right to live safely

It’s time. Time to protect our people and our neighbors. Time to demand better.

Yeah, we see what’s happening…

“I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land.”
— Harriet Tubman

Sista Checkin: Grieving Out Loud

Your Expertise is Needed!

We’re completely revamping The Right Response Directory and need your input to ensure it meets our community’s needs.

This critical resource connects you to alternative first-response programs offering compassionate support through peer responders, clinicians, and trained EMTs for calls like welfare checks, noise complaints, traffic incidents, and mental health crises.

Your feedback is vital for us to improve. Please take a few minutes to complete our confidential survey. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

A Mental Health Tip For You

In honor of PTSD Awareness Month, let’s remind ourselves that the body keeps score of trauma.

Triggers aren’t always obvious, so create a “calm plan” for moments when your body feels unsafe, even if your mind knows you are.

Start small: Identify one thing that helps you feel grounded—a song, a scent, a phrase, or a safe person to call. Write it down and keep it close. When your nervous system is overwhelmed, having a simple go-to plan can help you return to yourself with compassion, not shame.

Spread Some Blessings!

The consequences of police violence extend far beyond the loss of life. For families affected, it’s the loss of income, the sacrifice of basic necessities, and the start of a high-cost legal fight. If you have the capacity, consider donating to 1M4. Proceeds help support impacted families and sustain the work of 1M4 toward ending police violence for good.

As we carry forward the spirit of Juneteenth, remember this: liberation includes rest.

Our ancestors fought for freedom so we could live fully, not just survive. So do what you can, and rest when you need to. Whether you’re organizing on the frontlines or taking care of your mental health at home, it all matters.

Freedom is a collective journey, and we’ll keep going together.
