Hot girl summer is here! And while we hope you’ll have some time to find yourself and the kiddos lounging outside by the pool, we also wanted to give you the heads up that you and the summer sun might not be the only “hot” thing out here.

If you didn’t know, the summer months are known to show an increase in violent behaviors. The rise in temperature not only makes us uncomfortable but it causes a surge in our stress hormones and can trigger intrusive thoughts and aggressive behaviors. In short, it can have people out here HOT in the worst way.

So as you and your family set out to make a fun and memorable summer, make sure to keep an eye out for those in your surroundings who might be allowing this heat to get the better of them. And if you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, take a look at some of these tips on how you can de-escalate a situation when dealing with
someone who is angry or agitated.

And in the meantime, let’s give a shoutout to some of our 1M4 sistas who keep that hot girl summer energy all year long!

In our community, we team up when needed.

Self-Care Sunday

Although we can never anticipate someone else’s triggers, we can always support ourselves in understanding our own. So as the summer months gear up, take accountability for the things that might make you “hot” and follow these 8 steps to e-escalate your agitation when it rises.
By learning how to take cues from your body when you’re agitated and the things that could activate your triggers, you can steer yourself further away from possibly volatile situations or circumstances that may contribute to unwanted outcomes.

Spread Some Blessings!

The consequences of police violence extend far beyond the loss of life. For families affected, it’s the loss of income, the sacrifice of basic necessities, and the start of a high-cost legal fight. If you have the capacity, consider donating to 1M4. Proceeds help support impacted families and sustain the work of 1M4 toward ending police violence for good.

We know that you’re not going out here looking for trouble, but we also know that in this climate (political and temperature-wise), sometimes the trouble comes looking for us.
With temperaments flaring, people often look to law enforcement for help during frustrating or irritating situations. But because even the most mundane police calls can sometimes lead to fatal outcomes, we want to ensure we arm you with the information, tools, and resources you need to avoid it.
Because as a prevention-focused public safety organization working to combat unwarranted police encounters, we want you to have fun this summer and keep you, your kids, and your community safe. You’re fam, after all.
